Anthropic Just Put Claude In Excel. The Real News Is Hiding In Plain Sight.
Forget the 10 finance agents. The real story for SMB AI champions is the M365 add-in — and the agent pattern that travels with it.

Bloomberg called it "10 new finance agents." Anthropic shipped something bigger: Claude now lives in Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook with shared context across them. For the person at a 50-person company who got handed AI, this is the biggest delivery-channel change of the year. Here is what to do about it on Monday.
Anthropic announced 10 pre-built AI agents for financial services this week — pitch-deck drafters, financial-statement reviewers, compliance escalators. Bloomberg ran the announcement, Fortune covered it, finance Twitter lit up.
If you're the AI champion at a 50-person HVAC business, an accounting firm, or a manufacturing distributor, you read that headline and clicked away. Wall Street stuff. Not your problem.
Look again at one paragraph buried near the bottom:
> Claude now works across Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, Word, and Outlook through Microsoft 365 add-ins, and context moves between applications automatically, so work that starts in a spreadsheet can continue in a deck without re-explaining everything.
That is the news. Not for hedge funds. For you.
For the last year, the question every champion has been wrestling with is the same one: *how do I get AI into the apps my team actually uses?* Answer for the last twelve months has been some flavor of:
- "Open ChatGPT in another tab." (People stop after a week.)
- "Pay $30/user/month for Microsoft 365 Copilot." (Powerful, but a different model with different strengths and a different price tag.)
- "Build a custom thing." (You don't have a developer.)
- "Roll out a new tool." (IT pushes back, employees resent it.)
The Anthropic move changes that calculus. Claude — the model the AI press has been calling the most useful for actual work — now installs as an M365 add-in and shows up *inside* the apps your team already opens 50 times a day. No new tab. No new tool. No license stack-up. The Outlook ribbon gets a Claude button. The Excel formula bar gets Claude. The PowerPoint deck gets Claude. And — the part that actually matters — context follows you across them.
That last part is the unlock. Every AI tool until now has been a fishtank: you go to it, you ask, you copy the answer back out, you paste, you switch apps, you re-explain. The new pattern: you stay in your work, the AI follows you. The cognitive overhead drops to almost nothing.
If you've been waiting for the moment when AI stops feeling like *a thing employees have to remember to use* and starts feeling like *a feature of the apps they already use*, this is the moment.
You should do four things this month:
1. Pilot the M365 add-in with one role, not ten. Pick the role that lives in Outlook + Excel — for most SMBs that's finance, ops, or admin. Get them on the add-in. Don't try to roll it to the whole company; that's how AI programs die. One role. One success story. Then expand.
2. Compare it honestly to whatever you're using today. If you're already paying for Microsoft 365 Copilot, this is a real second look — different model, different tradeoffs, often different output quality on knowledge work. If you're running employees on personal ChatGPT seats (the most common SMB pattern, even if nobody's told you), the M365 add-in is the path to bringing that under governance without yanking the rug.
