ChatGPT Can Now Read Your iCloud Mail. Decide Which Account Gets the Key.

OpenAI added iCloud Mail and Calendar to ChatGPT on every plan, the free one included. If your business runs on an iPhone, here is how to connect it on purpose.

ChatGPT can now search your iCloud inbox and update your iPhone calendar, on every plan. For the many small businesses that run on an Apple account, here is the setup, the risk and the five-minute routine to do first.

A landscaper finishes a job at 4 PM and sits in the truck. He has 60 unread emails at his me.com address, three of them quote requests, and a calendar on his iPhone that his wife also edits. He asks ChatGPT: "Which customers asked for a quote this week, and what's on Thursday?" For the first time, it can answer, because it can read his inbox and his calendar.

That became possible on October 27, 2026. It is useful. It also means customer emails now pass through whichever ChatGPT account he happened to connect, and that choice deserves five minutes before it's made.

What it is, in plain words

OpenAI added two plugins to ChatGPT: iCloud Mail and iCloud Calendar. A plugin is a connection that lets ChatGPT reach into another service on your behalf. Once connected, you can ask ChatGPT to find an email, catch you up on your inbox, tell you what's next on your schedule or update a calendar event.

OpenAI says they're available on every ChatGPT plan, including the free one, on the web, the desktop app and the iPhone app. 9to5Mac confirmed they also work with Dots, ChatGPT's always-on assistants that check in on their own, and that a Dot can walk you through the setup.

You don't give ChatGPT your Apple password. Each plugin asks for an app-specific password: a separate 16-character code that Apple creates for one outside app. Apple only lets you make one if your account has two-factor sign-in turned on. You can have up to 25 at a time and cancel any of them without touching your main password.

How it got here:

  • September 2014: Apple began requiring app-specific passwords for outside apps that reach iCloud, so a mail app never holds the real Apple password.
  • August 20, 2026: ChatGPT added an Apple Messages plugin for the Mac, its first reach into Apple's own apps.
  • October 27, 2026: iCloud Mail and iCloud Calendar plugins arrived on all ChatGPT plans. ChatGPT could already connect to Gmail and Outlook.
Why it matters to a small business

Plenty of small businesses never moved to Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace. The owner's iPhone, an icloud.com or me.com address and the iPhone calendar are the whole office. A handyman, a hair salon, a two-truck moving company. Until this week those owners were left out of the inbox help that Gmail and Outlook users already had. Now they're in.

Three things come with it.

The account you connect becomes the office's filing cabinet. If you connect a free personal ChatGPT account, your customers' names, addresses, quotes and complaints now pass through an account with no company settings, and possibly one you also use for your kids' homework. Our piece on [company work in company accounts](/articles/company-work-company-accounts) covers why that matters. This is the same rule, with your inbox attached.

A calendar it can change is a calendar it can get wrong. Asking "what's on Thursday?" is harmless. Asking it to "move the Hendersons to Friday" is a change a customer will feel. If two people share the calendar, the other one may not know why the appointment moved.

Disconnecting isn't the end of it. Removing the plugin in ChatGPT does not cancel the app-specific password. That code stays valid until you delete it in your Apple account. And if you change your main Apple password, Apple cancels every app-specific password at once, so ChatGPT and any other mail app using one will stop working until you make new codes.

What to do about it, in order

1. Decide which ChatGPT account gets connected. Before anyone connects anything, pick the account on purpose. A paid business account your company controls is the better home for customer email than a free personal one. If the only ChatGPT account in the business is someone's personal one, hold off on connecting the business inbox until that's sorted.

2. Make one app-specific password, named plainly. Sign in at account.apple.com, open Sign-In and Security, then App-Specific Passwords, and create one just for ChatGPT with a name like "ChatGPT mail." Paste it only into the plugin's connection form, never into a chat. One app, one code, one name you'll recognize later.

3. Start with a read-only week. For the first week, only ask it to find and sum up: "What did the supplier say about the delivery date?" "Which customers asked about pricing?" "What's on Thursday?" Keep a short list of anything it got wrong. That list tells you how far to trust it.

4. Keep a person on every change. Moving, adding or deleting appointments, and sending email, stay with a person until you've seen it get the reading right for a while. If a Dot is watching your inbox, have it tell you what needs you, not act on it.

5. Write down how to undo it. Put the steps on one card: disconnect the plugin in ChatGPT's settings, then delete the "ChatGPT mail" code at account.apple.com. If a phone is lost, a staff member leaves or something looks off, do both. Apple's page also has a "Revoke All" option for a clean sweep.

Five checks before you connect
  • Is this the ChatGPT account you'd want customer emails passing through, and does the business control it?
  • Does your Apple account have two-factor sign-in turned on? (It must, or Apple won't make the code.)
  • Who else uses this calendar, and will they know when ChatGPT moved something?
  • Which kinds of email should never be summarized or forwarded: medical details, bank details, a legal dispute? Keep those out of the requests you make.
  • Do you know where the app-specific password is listed, so you can cancel it in under a minute?
Where it's going

The assistants are reaching past Microsoft and Google into the Apple accounts that a lot of very small businesses actually run on. The always-on assistants are next: instead of you asking, they'll check your inbox through the day and tell you what needs you. That's real time back for an owner who answers email from the truck. The owners who pick the right account, hold the key on purpose and keep a person on the changes will get that time without the surprises.
