ChatGPT Lands Inside Excel & Sheets as a Native Add-In

OpenAI's GPT-5.5 Instant is now every user's default, ChatGPT is a live sidebar inside Excel and Google Sheets, Microsoft's M365 E7 Frontier Suite went GA at $99/user/mo, AI in SharePoint is rolling out worldwide powered by Anthropic's Claude, and Colorado's AI Act is seven weeks from its June 30 enforcement deadline.

The Morning Read

1. OpenAI Makes GPT-5.5 Instant the Default and Drops ChatGPT Into Your Spreadsheets *(OpenAI / Releasebot)*

GPT-5.5 Instant is now rolling out to all ChatGPT users as the new default model, replacing GPT-5.3 Instant — bringing sharper accuracy, more concise answers, and stronger image and STEM reasoning.

Separately,

ChatGPT for Excel and Google Sheets is now generally available across all plans, powered by GPT-5.5.

The integration is a spreadsheet-native AI experience that lives in a sidebar, helping you build, update, and explain spreadsheets directly — including large, multi-tab files with formulas, references, and assumptions.

What it means for SMBs / MSPs:

Business, Enterprise, Edu, and K-12 customers have a free preview through June 2, 2026

— get clients using it before the billing clock starts.

2. Microsoft 365 E7 and Agent 365 Are Now Generally Available *(Microsoft)*

Microsoft 365 E7 — the Frontier Suite — is now generally available, offering a single integrated solution that unifies intelligence and trust so organizations can move from experimentation to enterprise-wide AI adoption.

In addition to being included with M365 E7, Agent 365 is available as a standalone license at $15 per user per month.

At $99 per user per month on an annual commitment, E7 replaces what would otherwise cost roughly $117 per user per month purchased separately.

What it means for SMBs / MSPs:

E7 tends to be overkill when you're on Business Premium and would only use the Copilot component — and the jump is harder to defend if you don't have a meaningful gap in identity or agent governance.

Qualify the fit before pitching the bundle.

3. AI in SharePoint Goes Worldwide — Powered by Anthropic's Claude *(Microsoft / Campus Technology)*

AI in SharePoint, which rolled out to Public Preview in March, is now rolling out worldwide in May, and in addition to new planning and building experiences, it automatically extracts and applies metadata, adapts libraries as content changes, and helps ensure information is structured to support accurate Copilot and agent experiences across Microsoft 365.

Microsoft disclosed that the initial rollout of advanced AI in SharePoint relies on Anthropic's Claude.

What it means for SMBs / MSPs:

EU, EFTA, and UK tenants have the Anthropic sub-processor toggle disabled by default, and government cloud environments have no access to the feature

— check tenant settings before your clients hit a wall when trying to use the new SharePoint AI features.

4. Colorado's AI Act Enforcement Is 50 Days Away *(OST Agency / Kiteworks)*

On June 30, 2026, Colorado's Senate Bill 24-205 takes effect — the first comprehensive state-level AI law in the U.S. If your small business develops or deploys a "high-risk AI system" influencing consequential decisions about Colorado consumers (employment, housing, credit, healthcare, education, insurance), you are covered, and violations carry penalties of up to $20,000 each.

What it means for SMBs / MSPs:

The small businesses that are adopting AI are doing so mostly through casual, unmanaged tools — very few have written AI policies, and almost none have conducted formal risk assessments

— which is exactly where your advisory value walks in the door.

5. Cyber Insurers Are Now Requiring AI-Specific Security Controls *(Kiteworks / Wilson Sonsini)*

The cyber insurance market is undergoing an AI-related transformation, with many carriers increasingly conditioning coverage on the adoption of AI-specific security controls — including documented evidence of adversarial red-teaming, model-level risk assessments, and specialized safeguards as prerequisites for underwriting.

What it means for SMBs / MSPs:

Organizations without robust AI risk management may face coverage denials or prohibitive premiums

— this is a concrete, dollars-and-cents conversation you can have with any client renewing their cyber policy this year.

️ Tool or Feature to Try This Week

ChatGPT for Excel (or Google Sheets)

ChatGPT for Excel and Google Sheets is a spreadsheet-native AI experience that lives in a sidebar inside your spreadsheets — it can help you build, update, and explain spreadsheets directly, including large, multi-tab files with formulas, references, and assumptions, supporting both creating from scratch and asking questions about existing spreadsheets.

  • Who it's for: Business owners who live in spreadsheets, bookkeepers, ops leads, or any MSP tech building client-facing reporting templates.
  • How long a first test takes: 20 minutes — open an existing messy workbook, fire up the add-in, and ask it to audit formulas or build a summary tab.
  • One concrete first step: Go to chatgpt.com/apps/spreadsheets, install the add-in for your preferred platform, and prompt: *"Explain what this workbook does tab by tab, then flag any broken formula references."*

Note: OpenAI says data shared with ChatGPT is not used to improve models by default for Business, Enterprise, Edu, and Teachers users — important for any client working with sensitive spreadsheets or financial models.

Put It to Work

Spend 30 minutes listing where AI touches hiring, lending, patient or insurance decisions in your business. Colorado's AI Act enforcement starts June 30, and you may be a covered deployer without knowing it. The businesses most at risk use AI casually through unmanaged tools with no written policies. A short inventory and a written policy move you out of that group.

*For MSPs:* A joint AI inventory with HR, lending, healthcare and insurance clients before the deadline often leads to a governance engagement and a policy document.

One Thing to Avoid

Treating E7's $99 list price as the whole cost story.

Agent 365 is $15 per user per month standalone or $99 inside the M365 E7 bundle — but both prices cover governance only, not the consumption costs of running agents in Copilot Studio (starting at $200 per 25,000 credits) or Azure AI Foundry.

Pitching E7 on the bundle math alone without mapping actual agent usage will create bill shock — and erode client trust fast.

Trend to Watch

Your client's spreadsheet is becoming an AI surface. Between ChatGPT now living natively inside Excel and Google Sheets, Copilot making multi-step edits to local Excel files, and

users soon being able to generate Excel spreadsheets directly from content stored in Copilot Notebooks , the humble spreadsheet is becoming the primary LLM interaction layer for most SMB employees — not a chat window, not a Copilot pane. Watch for the next battleground to be who owns the spreadsheet AI layer: OpenAI (ChatGPT add-in), Microsoft (Copilot in Excel), or Google (Gemini in Sheets). For MSPs, the practical implication is that data governance around spreadsheets — what goes in, what the AI can read, and where outputs are shared — needs to be part of every Copilot and AI deployment conversation starting now.
