Nvidia Agrees to Buy Hugging Face for ~$13 Billion

Nvidia's deal for Hugging Face puts the open-model hub under a chipmaker, while GPT-6 Astra lands in Microsoft and GitHub Copilot and a fully open model family ships under Apache 2.0.

The Morning Read

Nvidia agrees to acquire Hugging Face (CNBC, NVIDIA Blog, Quartz) Nvidia will pay $11.9 billion to Hugging Face stockholders plus up to $1 billion in retention equity for staff, a deal worth roughly $12.9 billion that is expected to close in the first half of 2027 pending regulatory approval. Nvidia says the hub stays open and Hugging Face will keep working with other chip vendors. What it means for SMBs / MSPs: If your clients pull open models from Hugging Face, nothing changes today, but it's a good moment to record which models you depend on and keep local copies of the weights.

GPT-6 Astra shows up in Microsoft Copilot and GitHub Copilot (Microsoft Tech Community, GitHub Changelog) Microsoft says GPT-6 Astra is rolling out as a selectable model in Copilot Cowork and Copilot Studio, grounded through Work IQ in a tenant's files, meetings and chats within existing permissions, and is available in Microsoft Foundry. GitHub made it generally available for Copilot Pro+, Max, Business and Enterprise, noting new models are enabled by default unless admins turn them off. The Microsoft 365 rollout is gradual, varies by region and tenant, and is managed from the admin center. What it means for SMBs / MSPs: Model choice inside Copilot is now an admin decision, so decide who can pick Astra for agents before your users find it on their own.

MBZUAI's IFM releases K2 Horizon, six fully open models (MarkTechPost, Moor Insights & Strategy) The Institute of Foundation Models released six Apache 2.0 models from 0.9B to 375B parameters, publishing weights, training code, data recipes, checkpoints and logs. vLLM, SGLang, Ollama and Unsloth supported them on day one. What it means for SMBs / MSPs: A permissive license plus published training data makes these some of the easiest open models to justify to a client's lawyer.

Sanders and Casar announce a bill to ban superintelligent AI (Office of Sen. Bernie Sanders, PBS News) The two lawmakers announced forthcoming legislation that would permanently ban superintelligent AI, pause advanced AI development until federal safety rules exist, create a cabinet-level agency, and carry penalties up to 20 years in prison. What it means for SMBs / MSPs: It's a marker, not a law; don't change plans, but expect clients to ask whether the tools they're buying could be regulated away.

️ Tool or Feature to Try This Week

K2 Horizon on a local machine. The smaller K2 Horizon sizes are available through Ollama, and the Apache 2.0 license allows commercial use. This is for MSPs and champions who need an offline or on-prem option for sensitive documents. A first test takes about 30 minutes. First step: install Ollama on a spare workstation, pull the 7B model, and run the same five internal-document questions you'd ask a cloud model, then compare answers side by side.

Put It to Work

Open your Microsoft 365 admin center and decide who can pick GPT-6 Astra in Copilot. GPT-6 Astra is rolling out as a selectable model in Copilot Cowork and Copilot Studio, managed from the admin center. On GitHub Copilot, new models are on by default unless an admin turns them off. Make the choice on purpose, and write down what you decided.

*For MSPs:* A one-hour model-governance session covers which models are enabled, who can select them, and a record of the decision.

One Thing to Avoid

Panic-migrating off Hugging Face. The deal won't close until 2027 and Nvidia has committed to keeping the platform open. Rebuilding a model pipeline over an acquisition headline costs real hours for a risk that hasn't shown up.

Trend to Watch

Open models are consolidating around the chip companies. Nvidia buying the biggest open-model hub while academic labs publish fully open model families shows two forces at once: open weights keep getting better, and the platforms that distribute them are becoming strategic assets for hardware vendors. For small businesses, the practical hedge is to keep the models you rely on in your own storage, whoever owns the shelf you got them from.
