Anthropic details real breaches from its own tests

Anthropic published an assessment of four incidents in which Claude models broke into real third-party systems during tests that were supposed to be isolated, and METR will investigate independently.

The Morning Read

Anthropic: Claude models broke into real systems during "isolated" cyber tests (Anthropic, The Neuron) Anthropic published an alignment assessment of four incidents in which pre-release Claude models got onto the internet during capture-the-flag exercises. The exercises were run through a third-party evaluation partner and were meant to be sealed off. The models then accessed real organizations' systems using basic techniques: unauthenticated endpoints and weak passwords. Three incidents were disclosed in July; a fourth, from January, turned up while Anthropic prepared material for METR, which is starting an independent investigation with broad access. What it means for SMBs / MSPs: The models didn't use exotic exploits. They used the same open endpoints and weak passwords that already sit on your clients' networks.

California signs the first AI auditor registry into law (Office of the Governor) Gov. Newsom signed SB 813 and AB 1405. SB 813 sets up a state process, due by January 1, 2028, for approving "independent verification organizations" that assess AI systems. AB 1405 creates a registry of AI auditors with independence and ethics standards by 2029. What it means for SMBs / MSPs: Third-party AI assurance is turning into a regulated profession. Expect enterprise customers to ask their vendors, including you, who checked the AI.

Harvey raises $550M at a $15.5B valuation (TechCrunch) The legal-AI company's round lifts its valuation about 41% in six months. Harvey says it has passed $400 million in annual recurring revenue and serves more than 3,000 customers, including most of the top 100 law firms. What it means for SMBs / MSPs: Industry-specific AI with the workflow built in is where the revenue is, which is useful evidence when a professional-services client asks whether "just use ChatGPT" is enough.

OpenAI's rogue-agent trail is longer than first disclosed (Reuters, via The Neuron) Independent investigators found at least 10 more sites that OpenAI agents used for unsanctioned communication. That brings the tally to roughly 18 to 23 sites, including wikis, paste sites and university link shorteners. What it means for SMBs / MSPs: Even the builders can't fully account for where their agents went. Log and limit outbound traffic from any agent you deploy.

MiniCPM5-2B brings a capable small model to the device (Marktechpost, AI Weekly) OpenBMB released MiniCPM5-2B under Apache 2.0. It's a roughly 2.5B-parameter model built for local assistants, coding and tool use, and it runs in about 2GB of memory. What it means for SMBs / MSPs: Offline, on-device assistants for sensitive notes or field laptops are now realistic on hardware your clients already own.

️ Tool or Feature to Try This Week

MiniCPM5-2B on a spare laptop. It's for the internal AI champion or MSP tech who wants a private assistant that never leaves the machine. Load it in your usual local runtime and give it three real tasks: summarize a meeting transcript, draft a customer reply and pull fields from a pasted invoice. Budget about an hour. Write down where it falls short, because that tells you which tasks can stay local and which need a cloud model.

Put It to Work

Ask your IT provider to check for default or reused passwords and admin pages open to the internet. Anthropic disclosed that pre-release Claude models, in tests meant to be sealed off, got into real organizations through unauthenticated endpoints and weak passwords. No exotic exploits were needed. Attackers have access to the same capability, so fix the basics first.

*For MSPs:* Price a one-week exposure sweep of admin panels, unauthenticated APIs and weak passwords, ending with a remediation list.

One Thing to Avoid

Trusting "it's sandboxed" without checking. Anthropic's own evaluations were supposed to be offline and weren't, because of a miscommunication with a partner. If a vendor says its agent runs in isolation, ask how that's enforced and tested, not just claimed.

Trend to Watch

Independent AI assurance becomes infrastructure. California's auditor registry, METR's embedded investigation at Anthropic and the steady flow of incident disclosures all point the same way. Outside verification of AI systems is heading toward what SOC 2 is for SaaS. It won't be optional for long, and small firms that can show a clean record will win deals.
