Talos Finds Malware Run by a Panel of AI Models
Cisco Talos documented a Windows implant that lets four commercial AI models vote on its next attack move, while voice AI got cheaper and more capable and the UN Security Council heard from AI labs.
Cisco Talos documents CLOSEDQUORUM, malware that takes orders from AI models (Cisco Talos) Talos published research on a Windows implant that sends host details to DeepSeek, Qwen, Mistral and Gemini, then carries out whichever action wins the vote: "steal," "inject," "persist" or "move." No human operator is needed after deployment. Talos has not confirmed use in the wild, and it released CAIRN, an open-source toolkit for hunting malware that relies on AI models. What it means for SMBs / MSPs: Outbound calls to AI provider APIs from executables that have no business making them are now a detection signal, so add that to your EDR and firewall review.
ChatGPT Voice gets plugins and a seat inside ChatGPT Work (9to5Mac, Unite.AI) OpenAI added plugin and connected-app support to Live voice on web, iOS and Android, including email, calendar and Slack, and brought Voice into ChatGPT Work. Users can now switch Voice between the GPT-6 Astra, Sol and Luna models. What it means for SMBs / MSPs: Voice is now a way to reach company data, so check which connectors your users have linked before they start talking to their inbox on the drive home.
Google ships Gemini 3.8 Flash TTS and Flash-Lite TTS (Google, MarkTechPost) The new text-to-speech models offer more than 2,000 production voices, prompt-based voice design, 100+ languages and dialects, and replication of an authorized voice from a 30-second sample. Flash-Lite is aimed at high-volume dubbing and voice agents. What it means for SMBs / MSPs: Natural-sounding phone and training audio is now a developer API call, not a studio booking.
AI labs brief the UN Security Council (UN News) The Council heard from OpenAI's Sam Altman, Anthropic representatives and Yoshua Bengio on AI risk, with Bengio warning of a threat no country can contain alone. The UN pointed to its new independent scientific panel on AI as part of its response. What it means for SMBs / MSPs: Nothing changes in your stack this week, but global oversight talk usually shows up later as contract and vendor questionnaire language.
Gemini 3.8 Flash-Lite TTS. Built for the MSP or champion who wants a cleaner voice for an after-hours phone greeting, an IVR menu or short training clips. A first test takes about 30 minutes in Google AI Studio. First step: paste your current phone greeting script, describe the voice you want in one sentence ("calm, mid-forties, clear American accent"), and generate three versions to play for the office manager. Skip voice replication unless you have written consent from the person whose voice it is.
Ask your IT provider which computers and apps in your office call AI services. Cisco Talos documented CLOSEDQUORUM, a Windows implant that asks AI models what to do next, though Talos hasn't confirmed use in the wild. An unexpected program calling several AI providers is now a warning sign, and blocking AI domains alone isn't enough. Knowing your approved AI tools makes the odd ones stand out.
*For MSPs:* A one-time AI traffic audit maps sanctioned AI use, finds shadow AI and sets an alert for unexpected callers, and leads into an acceptable-use policy.
Blocking AI domains and calling it done. Talos specifically warns against relying on domain blocks, because each call looks legitimate on its own. The signal is the combination: an unexpected executable calling several AI providers while touching LSASS or injecting into processes.
AI as the attacker's decision layer. Until now, AI in malware mostly meant better phishing text. CLOSEDQUORUM moves the model into the command-and-control loop, where it picks the next step. Expect defenders to start treating AI API traffic as a monitored category the way they treat remote-access tools, with allowlists by application rather than by user.
