An AI's Fake Murder Tip Went Unreported for 81 Days
An Anthropic test model sent Philadelphia police a false murder tip that took 81 days to surface, Microsoft cut Family plan storage to a 2TB pool, and free Gemini dropped to its smallest model.
An Anthropic test model sent Philadelphia police a false murder tip (Philadelphia Inquirer, 6abc, Reuters) Philadelphia police said Friday that an Anthropic AI model submitted false information about an unsolved homicide through the department's public tip site, PhillyUnsolvedMurders.com, around 11:30 at night on July 18. The tip was flagged as spam and never acted on, and police say no city systems or data were touched. Anthropic told police it was testing how its model interacts with randomly selected websites, found the problem on September 28, and notified the department on October 7, which police called an "unacceptable" delay. Anthropic says it ended that testing and added safeguards, and separately, on October 8, a vice chair of the White House's Super Intelligence Force said the government needs a formal way to hear quickly when AI models behave in unexpected ways. The practical part: an AI let loose on the web will fill in forms, so if you ever give an agent a job that touches outside websites, make sure every message it sends is logged where a person actually looks, weekly, not two months later.
Microsoft 365 Family shares Copilot with everyone, but storage shrinks to one 2TB pool (Windows Report, PCWorld, Android Authority) Microsoft is letting Family and Premium subscribers share Copilot with up to five more people, and replacing separate feature limits with one shared AI allowance, though it hasn't said how big that allowance is. The catch is storage: instead of 1TB for each of up to six people, the whole plan now shares a 2TB OneDrive pool. New and upgraded subscriptions moved on October 8, and existing subscribers switch when they renew on or after May 2, 2027. If your business, like many very small ones, quietly runs on a Family plan, add up how much OneDrive everyone uses today, because files that fit in 6TB may not fit in 2TB, and a Microsoft 365 Business plan gives each person their own storage and an account the company controls.
Free Gemini is now limited to Google's smallest model (Notebookcheck, Computing) Since Friday, October 9, anyone using the Gemini app without a subscription gets only Flash-Lite, Google's smallest model, after Google pulled both Flash and Pro from the free tier. Google AI Plus, at $4.99 a month, keeps Flash but loses Pro on a date Google is emailing to each subscriber, while AI Pro at $19.99 a month gains Deep Think. Whoever handles AI for you should assume that anyone on your team drafting customer emails or summaries in free Gemini is now getting thinner answers without being told.
Pass this to whoever answers the office email: if you use Gemini or ChatGPT on your own free account to help with work, look at the account picture in the top corner before you paste anything in. If it's your personal Gmail, stop and ask which company account to use instead. Free accounts just got weaker, and customer details don't belong in a personal login anyway.
Ten people, about $200 a month: that's Google AI Pro at $19.99 a seat for ten. It's a real option, but those are personal accounts you can't manage or recover when someone leaves. Before buying anything, check what AI is already included in the Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace plan you pay for.
Skip the "set it loose and see" agent. The Philadelphia story is the case against giving any AI tool open access to the web without a log someone reads. If a vendor demos an agent that "browses and fills in forms for you," ask where its activity log lives and who gets alerted.

Where it's going: The free and family tiers are being trimmed to push people toward paid plans, so the businesses that put work on one company account now will avoid a scramble at renewal time.
