4 Big US Banks Now Keep Outside AI Agents Out
Citi and Bank of America joined JPMorgan and Schwab in stopping outside AI agents from logging in or moving money, and Anthropic's own numbers show checking AI work is becoming the real job.
Citi and Bank of America join the banks keeping outside AI agents out of accounts (The Paypers, Retail Banker International, citing the Financial Times) Citi says it does not allow third-party AI agents or assistants to log into customer accounts or carry out transactions on its online banking. Bank of America is limiting AI agents' access to consumer deposits while it works out who is liable when an AI approves a payment, and says a person should stay in the loop before money leaves an account. JPMorgan and Schwab took the same line last week. Read-only sharing of balances through approved data services still works at Citi. For a small business, this settles a question before it costs you: don't plan on an AI agent that logs into your bank with your password and pays bills on its own. Let the AI gather invoices and draft the payment list, and keep the last click with a person. The reporting is about personal accounts, so ask your banker what the rule is for your business account.
Anthropic's own numbers: agents work six hours for every employee hour, and someone has to check them (Anthropic, Asume Tech) Anthropic published a study of its own workforce. By August, AI agent hours outnumbered employee hours six to one, and the share of junior technical staff fell from 21% to 14% since early 2025, with junior technical hires dropping from 27% to 9%. The finding that matters most outside a tech company: even non-technical staff would need about half their work week just to read everything their agents produced, and hiring managers there now look harder for judgment and the ability to work on one's own. Anthropic warns its data may not match the wider job market. The practical part: when you add an agent, you are also adding review work, so give someone the hours to do it. And if your entry-level jobs are mostly the routine tasks AI now handles, think about how your next new hire will learn the trade.
If you run a restaurant or a shop: picture the weekly supplier order. Today someone counts stock, writes the order, gets the invoice and pays it. An AI tool can pull last week's sales, draft the reorder and match the invoice when it arrives. The manager still checks the order before it goes out, and the owner or bookkeeper still pays it from the bank. That split, AI drafts and a person approves and pays, is exactly where the banks just drew the line.
Ask your bank one question. Call or message your business banker and ask: "Can an outside AI tool log into our account, and which apps can already read our balances?" While you are at it, open your bank's app and look for its list of connected apps. Unlink anything nobody recognizes.
Skip any tool that asks for your online banking password. A bookkeeping or AI assistant that wants your bank login, rather than connecting through the bank's own approved link, is now working against your bank's rules, and you would carry the risk if something went wrong.
Free on Tuesday: Microsoft is holding a free online OneDrive and Copilot event on October 20 at 9 AM Pacific, with demos and a live Q&A. If your team keeps its files in OneDrive, it is an easy hour to see what Copilot can do with them before anyone pays for more.

Where it's going: AI agents will do more of the prep work in every office, and the big institutions are making sure a person still signs off where money moves, so the businesses that decide now who approves what will move faster with less risk.
