Study finds a visit from a ChatGPT ad earned online shops far less than a visit from a Google ad

A working paper by researchers at WU Vienna and the Frankfurt School, dated October 2026 and still under review, followed 1,898 online shops through ChatGPT's country-by-country ad launch, PPC Land reported on Nov. 2. In US traffic, a visit from a paid ChatGPT ad brought in about $0.89 in sales, against about $2.45 for a visit from a paid Google search ad. The authors say the comparison describes what happened and does not prove the ads caused the gap.

Why it matters to a business like yours

If you sell online and a ChatGPT ad offer lands in your inbox, the clicks may cost more than the orders they bring. Run any test with a small budget and track sales per visit next to your Google ads before you move money between them.
