Three people charged with using AI to pose as company executives and lawyers, taking about $129 million

Federal prosecutors in New York unsealed an indictment on Nov. 5 charging three men with wire fraud, aggravated identity theft and money laundering. They are accused of emailing employees as the boss about a confidential deal, then holding calls where AI copied the executive's voice and sometimes face, and handing staff off to a fake lawyer at a big law firm who directed the wire. Prosecutors put the losses near $129 million between 2024 and 2026, and victims included hospitals, a bank and a pet food company.

Why it matters to a business like yours

The trick works on whoever sends payments, and the call can sound and look exactly like the owner. Set a rule that any urgent or secret payment request is confirmed by calling the person back on a number you already have, and tell staff no one will be in trouble for checking.
