Ask it to look it up and show its sources

The job: Research a purchase without trusting a guess

With web search, Claude checks current websites before it answers and includes citations, so you can see where each fact came from. Use it for anything that changes, like prices, product details or business hours. On a Team plan, an owner has to switch web search on first.

How

  1. Turn on web search from the "+" button in the message box. In the newest version of Claude there's no switch; it searches when that helps.
  2. Ask your question and say you want a link for each fact.
  3. Open two of the links and make sure they say what Claude says they say.

The prompt to copy

Search the web and compare [two or three products, like label printers for a small shop] for [what we need them to do]. Give me a short table with price, key features and common complaints, with a link for each fact. Write "couldn't find" instead of guessing.

What a good answer looks like

A short table where every fact has a link, and the gaps marked "couldn't find."

The mistake to avoid

Never clicking the links. A link that doesn't back up the answer is easy to miss if you don't look.

ChatGPT and Copilot can search the web too.
